Battle of Sacile 1809 (Age of Eagles)

Age of Eagles Battle report using the following AoE Scenario file for the Battle of Sacile 1809

Start of game with the Austrians holding Porcia (Middle-top) and the French advancing from Tamia (bottom left).

Turn 1. 

Severoli's 6th Division advances through the marsh towards Palse, while Sera's 1st Division skirts the left of the marsh. At the top of the photo, Barbou's 5th Division crosses the stream while Grenier's 3rd Division heads for the bridge at Fontana-Fredda. Boussier's 2nd Division advances jointly on Fontana-Fredda from the top right. The Austrians await the attack from a fairly strong defensive position.

Turn 2.

The French Divisions rapidly advance on the Austrian position. French artillery move up the road to cover the bridge approaches. Sahuc's French light cavalry move towards the exposed Austrian right flank.

Turn 3.

In the centre, Barbou's 5th Division engages with the Gajoli's Brigade. The Austrian artillery opens fire.

On the French left flank, Broussier's Division moves to cross the stream to outflank the Austrian position.

Gajoil's Brigade repels the the first French attack (centre photo). The Austrian reinforcements also arrive from Pordenone and the Austrian light cavalry moves to support the open right flank.


Turn 4.

The Austrians defending Palse score a resounding defeat on the attacking French Division (centre photo). Gajoli's Austrian Brigade (right photo) also decisively defeats a French Brigade and it retires spent. 

The Austrians pull back in the centre in the face of the French gunnery setting up in front of Fontana-Fredda. Austrian reinforcements move to the right flank.

Turn 5

The French set up another attack at the top right to try and take Palse. The Austrians have quickly reinforced their right flank as the French move across the stream.

The rest of the Austrian reinforcements move up in march column. The initial French attacks, though, have been repelled.

Turn 6

Two French Divisions move to attack against Palse.

On the Austrian right flank, the French have been out-manouvered with the Austrian reinforcements nicely set up.

Turn 7

The attack on Palse heats up with three French brigades attacking.

The Austrian cavalry outnumbers the French on the right flank and presses the attack as the French cross the stream. 

But the French light cavalry hold firm and push the Austrians back.

The Austrians have again beat back another attack on Palse. Now the Austrians have reinforcements to support their defence and the French attack starts to falter.

The Austrian centre holds firm with plenty of reinforcements and artillery.

Turn 8

The Austrian mass around Palse now seems and insurmountable task for the French to shift.

The French reinforcements arrive  on their left flank! Lamarque's Division and Pully's heavy cavalry can be seen in the top right.

Turn 9

The Austrian Grenadiers now move to attack the weakened French centre.

The French throw all they've got at the Austrian right flank.

Turn 10

The dice gods continue to favour the Austrians cavalry inflict a serious defeat on their French counterparts.

The French centre begins to dissolve and the French left and right flanks are now outnumbered. It's time for the French to call it a day with a decisive victory to the Austrians.
